The Elements 5 Process
The Elements 5 Process is a disciplined, client-centered approach to financial planning that helps organize financial information, clarify priorities, develop recommendations, and adjust the plan over time as circumstances change.
Elements 5 follows the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards’ 6-step financial planning process, adapted to the needs and complexity of each client relationship.
1. Establish the Relationship
The process begins with an initial discussion about your goals, priorities, concerns, and the scope of services that may be appropriate for your situation. This step helps define the working relationship and sets expectations for the planning engagement.
2. Gather Financial Information
Elements 5 gathers the information and documents needed to understand your current financial position. Depending on the engagement, this may include income, savings, investments, retirement accounts, debt, insurance, tax information, estate documents, business interests, and other relevant financial details.
3. Analyze Your Current Position
After the relevant information is gathered, Elements 5 analyzes your financial situation in light of your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, and other planning considerations. This may include review of cash flow, savings rate, debt use, tax burden, retirement readiness, investment allocation, and other areas that affect financial decision-making.
4. Develop and Present Recommendations
Based on that analysis, Elements 5 develops planning recommendations designed to improve financial organization, efficiency, and long-term decision-making. Recommendations are presented in the context of your goals and priorities, and may include alternative approaches when appropriate.
5. Assist with Implementation
After recommendations are reviewed, you decide whether and how to implement them. When appropriate, Elements 5 can implement investment-related recommendations through its investment management services and can also coordinate with your accountant, attorney, insurance professional, or other advisors you choose for matters outside the firm’s scope.
6. Monitor and Update the Plan
Financial planning is an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. As your life, goals, family circumstances, business interests, tax situation, or investment needs change, Elements 5 reviews the plan and updates recommendations so that the strategy remains aligned with your objectives.
What This Means for You
The Elements 5 Process is designed to provide advice that is organized, personalized, and responsive to change. The goal is to help you make better financial decisions with a plan that reflects both your current situation and your longer-term priorities.
